GOES

Overview

GOES-R (GOES-16) and GOES-S (GOES-17) are the first two in the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) series of four NOAA geostationary weather satellites. They provide advanced imagery and real-time mapping of weather, lightning and monitoring of solar activity and space weather.

RAL Space involvement

RAL Space provided the camera electronics for the Solar UV instrument on board both satellites, designing, manufacturing, assembling and testing the electronics using uniquely designed ASIC.

Technology Highlight

Camera Electronics for SUVI

RAL Space provided the camera electronics for SUVI – a telescope that observes the Sun in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength range. The design of the SUVI camera electronics box (CEB) uses uniquely designed ASIC, our electronics coupled with CCDs provided by e2v technologies ltd to deliver the scientific requirements of the imager. The primary requirements of the CEB were similar to those o earlier missions, building on the technology developed for NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory mission. The long duration and high-reliability of the GOES-R mission have led to the development of a custom redundant SpaceWire FPGA core.
