Multi-Layer Insulation

The Multi‑Layer Insulation (MLI) team carries out design, manufacture and integration of bespoke thermal insulation systems, which are a critical component of spacecraft thermal control.

MLI enables instruments and subsystems to achieve and maintain the temperatures required for demanding scientific measurements. The facility has fabricated thermal hardware for missions such as Solar Orbiter, SLSTR and MicroCarb

What we do

Our dedicated MLI team delivers bespoke MLI solutions,  with services ranging from research and development to full manufacturing and integration.

  • Supporting and leading MLI projects through engineering consultancy, MLI material thermo-optical and resistance properties measurements, conceptual and detailed design, blanket manufacturing to integration
  • Use of MLI specific equipment for material property measurement and inspection, sewing and cutting blankets 
  • Integration within cleanroom with ESD protection equipment when applicable 
  • Work in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams within RAL Space which provide the opportunity to wider and embedded services

Novel cryogenic insulation for Webb's coolest instrument

Working alongside the RAL Space thermal teams, our MLI experts designed, manufactured and integrated of a novel cryogenic insulation as part of the solution allowing the instrument to reach temperatures of around 6K, which was crucial for science delivery.
