Operated and maintained to ISO14644 our clean rooms are used for the assembly, integration and test of spacecraft instruments and sub-systems. The rooms are fully conditioned for temperature, humidity and pressure and benefit from the addition of carbon filtration to limit the transmission of airborne hydrocarbons into the facilities.

Each of the test facilities is situated within its own cleanroom but in addition a number of instrument level build facilities are available, a summary of which is given below:

Clean room 1

  • Main area: 11 metres x 7 metres at ISO Class 6 (1,000)
  • Horizontal laminar flow unit: 5 metres x 5 metres at ISO Class 5 (100)
  • 2 Laminar flowbenches: 1 metre x 0.5 metres and 2 metres x 0.5 metres at ISO Class 5 (100)
  • Central changing room: Lockers for up to 20 people

Recent major projects include:

  • Hinode (Solar-B) EIS Instrument AIT (2001 to 2005)
  • JWST MIRI Instrument AIT (2006 to present)


Clean Room 2

  • Main area: 12 metres x 7 metres at ISO Class 6 (1,000)
  • Horizontal laminar flow unit: 5 metres x 3 metres at ISO Class 5 (100)
  • 5 Laminar flowbenches: 1 metre x 0.5 metres at ISO Class 5 (100)
  • Central changing room: Lockers for up to 20 people

Recent major projects include:

  • MSG GERB Instruments AIT (1995 to 2009)
  • HERSCHEL SPIRE Instrument AIT (2002 to 2009)
  • EARTHCARE BBR Instrument AIT (2010 to 2012)
