The Group has pioneered retrieval of tropospheric ozone and height-resolved methane and produces multi-year global data sets on ozone, methaneaerosol and clouds in NERC’s National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and for ESA’s Climate Change Initiative.

Current research centres on increasing near-surface sensitivity of ozone and methane and derivation of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), for applications including air quality, surface flux estimation and ecosystem health. RSG is also involved in the development and testing of new instruments and defining instrument requirements for new satellites.

The Group works closely with partners in the national and international science community to exploit its datasets to test climate models and their representations of composition-climate interactions and surface-atmosphere interactions.  A near-real time chain is being established on JASMIN-CEMS to support operational users such as Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. The Group’s expertise covers spectrometry from UV through IR to millimetre wavelength and VIS/IR imagery. In parallel to exploiting existing data, the Group provides scientific direction and expert support to future satellite missions and precursor airborne instruments.
