The STFC Newton Agri-Tech Fund

Developing China through the UK Strengths in Remote Sensing and Modelling

This new fund aims to provide real solutions for:

Sustainable intensification

  • Improving yields
  • Minimising environmental impacts

Climate smart farming

  • Reducing emissions from agriculture
  • Climate change resilience

Pests and diseases

  • Detection and monitoring
  • Modelling and predicting

Agricultural science and technology is driven by the global changelings of; rising populations, rapid development of emerging economies and global shortages of land, water and energy.  These challenges are made even more difficult in light of a changing climate.  There is, therefore, both an opportunity and a need to develop world leading agricultural technology, innovation and sustainability solutions.  These will develop new technologies, products and services to increase yield sustainably while ensuring international development through exporting our strengths to developing nations and economies.

The Newton fund is an initative intended to strengthen research and innovation partnerships between the UK and developing nations in order to develop science and technology partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare in the partner countries.

The STFC Newton Agri-Tech Fund is a £12M initiative to use the UK's expertise in remote sensing and modelling in the area of agricultural technology (agri-tech) to work with and aid the Chinese farming community.

The £12M fund is spread over 5 years (£2M this FY14, £3M, £3M, £2M, £2M) and will make use of the breakthroughs in satellite imaging, remote sensing and modelling to help provide facilities and technologies that will support research driven, decision making tools for farmers and policy makers.
